Yogyakarta’s urban area is a center of economic growth, education, and tourism that experiences very high levels of daily mobility, as indicated by the increase in the number of motor vehicles from 3.1 million units in 2021 to 3.4 million units in 2023. Conventional road performance evaluation through field surveys is constrained by cost and time requirements; therefore, a remote sensing-based approach using high-resolution satellite imagery is needed. This study aims to (1) analyze the capability of pan-sharpened Pleiades imagery to extract spatial data relevant to road performance parameters and (2) evaluate road performance based on road capacity, peak-hour traffic volume, and level of service for traffic management purposes.
The study was conducted on 21 main corridor roads divided into 39 analysis segments using 0.5 m-resolution pan-sharpened Pleiades imagery processed with the Brovey Transform method. Roadside land-use information and road geometric parameters, including road width, number of lanes, number of carriageways, median, and shoulder/kerb, were extracted through visual interpretation and subsequently assessed for accuracy against field conditions. Additional primary data were obtained through field surveys involving traffic volume counts during three periods (morning, midday, and afternoon) for both weekday and weekend conditions. Subsequently, the capacity of each segment was calculated in accordance with the Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual (Pedoman Kapasitas Jalan Indonesia, PKJI) 2023 using the basic capacity adjusted by lane-width, directional separation, side-friction, and city-size adjustment factors. The resulting capacity was then compared with the peak-hour traffic volume to determine the degree of saturation and level of service for each road segment.
The pan-sharpening results demonstrated improved spatial sharpness and enhanced readability of road geometric features, supporting visual interpretation with high accuracy relative to field conditions, namely 90.9% for land use, 95% for road width, 86.54% for the number of lanes, 98.72% for the number of carriageways, 97.44% for medians, and 94.87% for shoulders/kerbs. Road level of service on weekdays indicated that Parangtritis Road, Maguwo Road, Kaliurang Road, and Godean Road were classified as Level of Service F on both weekdays and weekends, indicating the need for priority treatment. Meanwhile, Imogiri Barat Road and Wonosari Road require particular attention on weekends due to substantial declines in level of service associated with increased tourism activity along the southern corridor.
