Rice production plays a strategic role in maintaining national food security, particularly in key production areas such as Kepanjen District, Malang Regency, East Java, which contributes significantly to Malang Regency's status as one of Indonesia's national rice granaries. However, conventional rice production data collection methods that rely on crop-cutting surveys in the field require considerable time, cost, and labor, making them less able to represent the overall condition of rice cultivation. Accurate and efficient rice production estimation can be supported through the use of remote sensing data, such as Sentinel-2 imagery, which is capable of monitoring rice plant growth from the early stage to harvest both spatially and temporally.

This study used two Sentinel-2 Level-2A images acquired on 29 April 2025 and 14 October 2025, representing the first and second planting seasons, respectively, to estimate rice production in the study area. The applied methods included multilevel Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) land cover classification to distinguish paddy fields from other land covers while simultaneously identifying rice growth phases (flooded, vegetative, generative, and fallow) through multilevel image segmentation that considers the spectral, textural, and shape characteristics of objects. This was followed by the transformation of four vegetation indices (NDVI, MSAVI, mSR, and EVI2), a field survey of 102 farmers through interviews, and linear regression modeling to predict rice productivity based on vegetation index values.

The land cover classification results showed an Overall Accuracy of 84.60% with a Kappa index of 0.787 for the first planting season and 78.73% with a Kappa index of 0.728 for the second planting season, indicating that the multi-level OBIA approach was able to distinguish paddy fields and rice growth phases with reasonably good accuracy. The best regression models were NDVI for the first planting season (R² = 0.737) and MSAVI for the second planting season (R² = 0.808), with Standard Errors of Estimate of 2.961 ton/ha and 2.584 ton/ha, respectively. The total estimated harvested area and rice production across both planting seasons were 2,917.64 ha and 21,791.15 tons.
