Electricity consumption in Indonesia's residential sector continues to rise, partly driven by the widespread use of conventional air-conditioning systems. Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) is a renewable energy technology with the potential to serve as an alternative cooling system, as it utilizes subsurface ground temperature as a heat exchange medium. This study aims to analyze the effect of mass flow rate variation on outlet temperature, pump power, and thermal power in a closed loop GSHP system with a U-tube pipe configuration.

Numerical simulations were performed using COMSOL Multiphysics 6.4 software with a three-dimensional geometric model based on data from Harris et al. (2024), including a borehole diameter of 107.95 mm and a borehole depth of 182.9 m. The mass flow rate variations used were 0.07 kg/s, 0.87 kg/s, 1.67 kg/s, and 2.67 kg/s, with a working fluid inlet temperature of 25°C and an undisturbed ground temperature of 11°C.

Two types of studies were carried out: a time-dependent study for the first hour of operation, and a stationary study for steady-state conditions. The results show that during the first hour of operation, the mass flow rate variation had no significant effect on the working fluid temperature. However, under steady-state conditions, the mass flow rate variation was shown to affect the outlet temperature, with the largest temperature difference (?T) occurring at a mass flow rate of 1.67 kg/s at 3.285°C, and the smallest ?T occurring at 0.07 kg/s at 3.07°C. Increasing the mass flow rate also increased the required pump power due to a rise in pressure drop, and increased the system's thermal power from 0.889 kWth to 35.659 kWth. These findings indicate that selecting an appropriate mass flow rate requires balancing the thermal power generated against the pump power required, so that the U-tube GSHP system can operate optimally, particularly under tropical climate conditions.
