The installation of steel sheet piles (SSP) generally uses the vibro hammer method, which generates high levels of vibration and may affect surrounding buildings. One project employing this method is the Jakarta Sewerage Development Project (JSDP) Zone 1 Package 3. At Shaft C-22.0, located near a school and a cultural heritage building, vibro hammer installation was halted because it disrupted learning activities and cracks were observed in nearby buildings. Consequently, the contractor switched to the Silent Piler (Crush Mode) method. The selection of an SSP installation method needs to consider the vibration impacts on surrounding buildings in addition to productivity and cost (SNI 7571:2010; Minister of Environment Decree No. 49 of 1996). This study aims to compare the Silent Piler (Crush Mode) method with the combination of preboring and vibro hammer in terms of productivity, implementation cost, and vibration impacts, and to determine which method is more effective.

The study was conducted at Shaft C-22.0, where the Silent Piler (Crush Mode) method was used, and Shaft E-12.0, where the combination of preboring and vibro hammer was applied. The cycle time and vibration data were obtained through direct field observations using a stopwatch and a vibration meter, while the cost data were obtained from project records. Productivity was analyzed based on pile installation cycle times, costs were compared per meter, and the vibration impacts were evaluated using peak particle velocity (PPV), with a threshold of 2 mm/s based on Minister of Environment Decree No. 49 of 1996 and SNI 7571:2010.

Based on the research findings, the Silent Piler (Crush Mode) method is more effective and efficient for SSP installation at the study location, which is adjacent to vibration-sensitive buildings. This method achieved a productivity of 0.55 m/min at a cost of IDR 689,603.65 per meter, whereas the combination of preboring and vibro hammer achieved a productivity of 0.30 m/min at a cost of IDR 1,268,703.57 per meter. The vibration measurements showed that the Silent Piler generated PPV values ranging from 0.32 to 1.69 mm/s, meeting the 2 mm/s threshold. In contrast, the vibro hammer generated PPV values ranging from 1.48 to 6.20 mm/s, with most measurement points exceeding the threshold. However, the combination of preboring and vibro hammer remains a viable alternative because the required equipment and skilled labor are relatively more readily available in the field.
