Peatlands play an important role as carbon reservoirs and in regulating hydrological processes; therefore, accurate surface elevation information is required to support their management and monitoring. However, the availability of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) with adequate spatial resolution and vertical accuracy in peatland areas remains a challenge. Freely available DEMs generally have relatively coarse spatial resolution, whereas the acquisition of high-resolution data using UAVs can be costly for large-area coverage. One alternative that can be investigated is the use of high-resolution PlanetScope satellite imagery, which is available free of charge for research purposes, and processed using the Ames Stereo Pipeline (ASP). This study aims to evaluate the capability of PlanetScope imagery to generate DEMs in peatland areas through stereo processing using ASP.

The study was conducted in the peatland area of Pulau Padang, Riau Province, using seven PlanetScope image pairs acquired in 2016, namely P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6, and P7. The acquisition year was selected because it matched the acquisition year of the LiDAR data used as comparison data. Of the seven image pairs evaluated, three pairs, namely P1, P2, and P4, met the established quality criteria and were used for further processing. The Digital Surface Model (DSM) was generated through stereo matching using the More Global Matching (MGM) algorithm. Subsequently, the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) was derived from the stereo-generated point cloud by filtering ground points using the Progressive Morphological Filter (PMF), which was selected after comparison with the Cloth Simulation Filter (CSF). Systematic vertical bias in the DSM was corrected using Trend Surface Analysis, with 2016 LiDAR data as the reference. The vertical accuracy of the DSM and DTM was then evaluated against the LiDAR data using RMSEz and LE90 and classified according to SNI 8202:2019.

The generated DEMs have a spatial resolution of 5 m. The evaluation results show that the DSM has an RMSEz of 9.65–11.19 m, equivalent to approximately 1.93–2.24 times the output spatial resolution, with an LE90 of 15.91–19.01 m. Meanwhile, the DTM has an RMSEz of 11.32–15.15 m, equivalent to approximately 2.26–3.03 times the output spatial resolution, with an LE90 of 18.68–25.00 m. Based on SNI 8202:2019, all DSMs meet Class 2 vertical accuracy requirements for mapping at a scale of 1:50,000. The DTM from pair P2 meets Class 2 requirements at a scale of 1:50,000, while the DTMs from pairs P1 and P4 meet Class 2 requirements at a scale of 1:100,000. The achieved accuracy remains outside the range initially expected in this study. One factor influencing the results is the weak stereo geometry of the PlanetScope image pairs, as indicated by Base-to-Height (B/H) ratios of 0.015–0.049. These values are considerably lower than the B/H range of 0.5–0.9 used as a reference for more favorable stereo geometry in previous studies. Nevertheless, the results indicate that PlanetScope imagery processed using ASP can still produce DSMs and DTMs that meet vertical accuracy standards for medium-scale mapping in peatland areas
