vertikal berbahan extruded acrylic tebal 5 mm (diameter 110 mm, tinggi 1300 mm,

dengan kepala tangki berdiameter head). Air dipanaskan hingga 50°C

The increasing global energy demand has encouraged the development of

energy storage technologies capable of improving energy utilization efficiency,

including the utilization of waste heat and renewable energy sources. One of the

most widely developed technologies is the stratified Thermal Energy Storage (TES)

tank, which operates by maintaining the separation between hot and cold water

layers, allowing thermal energy to be stored more effectively. The quality of

thermal stratification is influenced by several factors. Therefore, this study aimed

to design and construct a laboratory-scale stratified Thermal Energy Storage (TES)

tank and experimentally investigate the effects of tank head diameter and flow rate

on thermal stratification.

The research was conducted experimentally at the Heat and Mass Transfer

Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada, using a vertical

cylindrical TES tank made of 5 mm thick extruded acrylic (110 mm diameter, 1300

mm height, with an enlarged head section). Water was heated to 50°C using an

immersion heater and thermostat, then circulated by a pump through a perforated

radial-ring diffuser with three diameter variations (11, 15, and 19 cm) at three flow

rate variations (1.0, 1.25, and 1.5 LPM), measured using a rotameter. Temperature

distribution was recorded using 12 thermocouples and a data logger, then analyzed

using nonlinear regression via the Four Parameter Sigmoid (FPS) method to obtain

the Tc, Th, C, and S? parameters, which served as the basis for calculating

thermocline thickness (WTC), cumulative stored energy (Qcum), and Half-cycle

Figure of Merit (FoM1/2).

The results showed that increasing the diffuser diameter from 11 cm to 19 cm

at a flow rate of 1.25 L/min reduced the average thermocline thickness (WTC) from

27.57 cm to 13.17 cm, reduced the average heat loss energy (Clost) from 17.67 Wh

to 8.42 Wh, increased the average Half-cycle Figure of Merit (FoM½) from 81% to

86%, and resulted in higher cumulative stored energy (Qcum) at the 12th minute,

reaching approximately 262.44 Wh, 242.09 Wh, and 250.73 Wh for the 11 cm, 15

cm, and 19 cm diffuser diameters, respectively. Meanwhile, for the 15 cm diffuser,

increasing the flow rate from 1.0 to 1.5 L/min increased the average thermocline

thickness (WTC) from 11.26 cm to 31.58 cm and the average Clost from 7.42 Wh

to 20.71 Wh, while the average FoM½ decreased from 92% to 82%. On the other

hand, the cumulative stored energy (Qcum) at the 12th minute increased from

approximately 201.32 Wh at a flow rate of 1.0 L/min to 286.48 Wh at 1.5 L/min. In

addition, the validation results demonstrated good agreement between the

visualization method and the Four Parameter Sigmoid (FPS) method, indicating that

the FPS method is a reliable approach for evaluating thermal stratification

characteristics and the performance of stratified thermal energy storage tanks.
