Coffee agroforestry is a land-use system that integrates both production and ecological functions, including carbon storage. The spatial configuration of vegetation, represented by its vertical and horizontal arrangement, is assumed to influence the ability of agroforestry systems to accumulate biomass and store carbon. This study aimed to analyze the spatial configuration of coffee agroforestry, determine the carbon storage potential of coffee agroforestry systems, and examine the relationship between spatial configuration and carbon storage potential.
The study was conducted in Dusun Turgo, Purwobinangun Village, Pakem District, Sleman Regency, from January to March 2026. Data were collected from 12 sample plots, consisting of six simple coffee agroforestry plots and six complex coffee agroforestry plots, selected using purposive sampling. Spatial configuration was analyzed through vertical projections based on Huxley’s classification and horizontal projections based on vegetation distribution patterns. Biomass and carbon stock were estimated using non-destructive allometric equations.
The results showed that, based on the cumulative inventory from six sample plots, complex coffee agroforestry exhibited a more diverse vegetation composition, comprising 20 plant species, compared with simple coffee agroforestry, which comprised 11 plant species. The vertical spatial configuration of both agroforestry systems consisted of two to four canopy strata, while the horizontal spatial configuration exhibited a random mixture vegetation distribution pattern. The biomass, carbon stock, and CO2 sequestration potential of complex coffee agroforestry were 45.93 Mg/ha, 21.59 Mg C/ha, and 79.23 Mg CO2e/ha, respectively, whereas those of simple coffee agroforestry were 30.95 Mg/ha, 14.56 Mg C/ha, and 53.38 Mg CO2e/ha, respectively. Coffee agroforestry systems with more complex spatial configurations tended to have greater carbon storage potential due to their more efficient utilization of growing space, both vertically and horizontally.
