Tea clone evaluation generally relies on conventional measurements of agronomic traits and harvested shoot yield, which require considerable time and labor. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based RGB imagery has potential as a supporting approach for more efficient phenotypic evaluation of tea clones. This study aimed to estimate the genetic variation of RGB vegetation indices derived from UAV imagery and their genotypic correlations with total shoot weight as a basis for evaluating their potential for indirect selection. The study was conducted at the Binorong Plantation of PT Pagilaran, Batang, Central Java, from April to June 2026, using 72 plots comprising 24 genotypes arranged in three blocks. RGB imagery was acquired every two weeks for two months. Agronomic observations included shoot height, shoot number, and harvested shoot components, including the weight and number of pecco and banji shoots, weight of acceptable shoots, and total shoot weight. The vegetation indices analyzed were VARI, GLI, and ExG. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance, broad-sense heritability, genotypic correlation, and phenotypic correlation. The results showed that genetic variation in the vegetation indices differed among indices and growth phases. ExG showed positive genotypic correlations with total shoot weight across all growth phases. At 57 days after picking, ExG had a broad-sense heritability of 0.6559 and a genotypic correlation of 0.5301. Therefore, ExG at 57 days after picking was the most promising secondary trait for supporting indirect selection of tea clones based on shoot yield, although it could not fully replace direct measurement of harvested yield.
