The tension between the narrative and the reality of religious pluralism in Indonesia demonstrates that diversity does not always exist on an equal footing. In practice, religious pluralism unfolds within unequal social relations and is inextricably linked to the dominance of the majority. These practices are depicted in the film "Berdoa, Mulai" (2022). This study examines how the film represents the everyday religious experiences of religious minorities, as well as how these representations are interpreted and reflected upon in daily life. Using a multi-sited ethnography approach, this study treats the film as an arena of representation and in-depth interviews as a means of exploring these representations through empirical experience. The analysis draws on Stuart Hall’s theory of representation and the concept of lived religion developed by Meredith McGuire and Nancy Ammerman.
The research findings indicate that representations of religious experience in films are presented through the spheres of education, family, the social environment and friendships. These spheres reveal the hegemony of the majority and inequalities in religious practice, thereby encouraging identity negotiation through adaptation that tends not to directly challenge the existing inequalities. Findings from the interviews reveal similar patterns of domination and adaptation that are linked to the experiences depicted in the films, and which further expand the representation of religious experiences in everyday life. The negotiations taking place in these empirical spaces do not constitute a complete acceptance of the majority’s norms, but rather represent a way in which informants maintain their identities through the selection of spaces for religious practice, moral considerations, and personal principles when confronting religious diversity. Thus, the research demonstrates that the dominance of the majority in everyday life does not always take the form of open conflict, but can manifest through more subtle forms in daily interactions and become practices that are regarded as commonplace.
