This study examines the relationship between religion and freshwater, with a particular focus on water pollution and the impact on Indigenous communities regarding the degradation of water resources caused by the extractive industry. It is explores the experiences of one majority-Indigenous community in North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, namely the Mori Indigenous Community (MIC). The region of North Morowali is known as Wita Mori, which translates to “the Land of Mori”. The study focuses on two selected Mori Indigenous Communities that living in Tiu village, Petasia sub-district (Mori Petasia), and the other in Korowalelo village, Lembo sub-district (Mori Bawah). The key water resources include Tiu Lake, the Tadiola spring, and several in Tiu village, as well as the Rinorambe natural spring and some water sources in Korowalelo village. This study applies a qualitative research methodology, utilizing in-depth interviews and direct observation for data collection. It employ an ethnographic approach within the framework of Global Indigenous research on freshwater. The indigenous religion paradigm serves as the guiding theoretical framework to examine and explore the religious dimensions of the Mori indigenous community’s water story. The study aims to investigate the contribution of religion to water preservation from the Mori Indigenous community experience, local knowledge, and worldview, with the ultimate objective of developing the concept of “healthy water”. The findings reveal three main points. First, the Mori indigenous community possesses a distinct water story that reflects an interconnected and interdependent relationship between the community and its water resources. Although both Tiu and Korowalelo villages share similarities in their water stories, they also exhibit notable differences. Second, these water stories are increasingly challenged by the influence of Christianity, which has contributed to the degradation of water resources. Third, the Mori indigenous water story is recognized, reclaimed, and reconstructed as eco-religious narratives. Then the analysis of these eco-religious narratives centres on the dialogue of four core elements of religion: God, Humans, Ancestors, and Nature (including Other Beings). This study contributes for the dialogue between Indigenous religion and Christianity. The dialogue between Lamoa (the ancestral belief system), and Christianity, as practiced by the Gereja Kristen Sulawesi Tengah (Central Sulawesi Christian Church), facilitates the embrace of water stories as eco-religious narratives. Ultimately, these eco-religious narratives are revitalized as part of Mori Indigenous ecological knowledge, fostering renewed relationships among all elements and contributing to the development of the concept of healthy water.
