The rapid growth of live-streaming commerce, particularly through TikTok Shop, has created a retail environment where real-time interaction, urgency cues, and influencer presence can prompt consumers to purchase without prior planning. This study examines how influencer credibility — expertise, trustworthiness, and attractiveness — drives the urge to buy impulsively among Generation Z consumers in Indonesia, and whether trust in the influencer mediates this relationship. Grounded in the Stimulus-Organism-Response framework, Source Credibility Theory, and the Elaboration Likelihood Model, the study tested seven hypotheses using a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected online from 250 valid Generation Z respondents across Indonesia and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) in SmartPLS 4.
The results show that expertise and trustworthiness have a significant positive effect on trust in the influencer. That trust, in turn, significantly drives the urge to buy impulsively, with full mediation confirmed for both paths. Attractiveness, however, showed no significant effect on trust and no significant direct or indirect effect on impulsive buying, meaning its corresponding hypotheses were not supported. These findings indicate that among Generation Z viewers of TikTok Shop live streams, trust built through perceived competence and honesty — rather than physical appeal — is the key psychological mechanism translating influencer credibility into impulsive purchases. The study contributes theoretical insight into how credibility-trust pathways operate for spontaneous, affect-driven purchasing behavior rather than deliberate intention, and offers practical implications for brands and influencers seeking to design more effective live-streaming commerce strategies.
