This study analyses the role of the Ibu Profesional (IP) community as a community-based development actor, examines the implementation of development communication through a social marketing communication approach, and explores the dynamics of change experienced by community members during this process.
A qualitative method with a case study approach was employed. Data collection involved participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, Forum Group Discussions (FGDs), and document analysis. Research informants comprised national management (Secretary General and National Creative Media Manager), regional management of IP Yogyakarta (Regional Secretary, Regional Creative Media Manager, and Chairman of the Yogyakarta Student Association), and nine active members of IP Yogyakarta.
The findings indicate that the IP community functions as a development communication actor through educational, transformational, social mobilisation, mediative, and value-strengthening roles at the micro, meso, and macro levels. Social marketing is implemented in an integrated manner using the 4P mix: social products are conceptualised as self-development, interpreted by members as the "best version of themselves"; social prices encompass commitments of time, energy, psychological readiness, and learning engagement; distribution occurs via both online and offline channels; and promotion is achieved through value framing, role modelling, member participation, and utilisation of public spaces during events. The primary findings reveal that change within the community does not manifest immediately as behavioural change, but rather emerges through shifts in self-orientation, specifically in how individuals define themselves, their roles, and life directions. This transformation is facilitated by multilevel communication and social learning processes that promote gradual internalisation of values. The "Best Version of Self" represents a manifestation of altered self-orientation, which subsequently leads to contextual behavioural change. These results confirm that changes in self-orientation serve as the foundation (pre-behavioral change) for developing more sustainable behaviors. Furthermore, the interaction between communication strategies and individual characteristics influences changes in self-orientation.
