A flash flood occurred in Aceh Province in November 2025, affecting the Jambo Aye River basin, which flows through North Aceh and East Aceh Regencies. The flash flood carried large volumes of water, sediment, and logs, exhibiting characteristics similar to a galodo flood. The presence of the river in a U-shaped valley and the discovery of logs after the flood indicate the potential for riverbanks changes due to lateral erosion. However, the characteristics of these changes are not yet fully understood, including their extent and implications for the fluvial landforms. Obtaining this information requires data with adequate spatial coverage, accuracy, and temporal resolution. The use of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 imagery can provide more comprehensive information because it utilizes data from both SAR and optical sensors. Therefore, this final project aims to identify changes in the Jambo Aye River banks before and after the flash flood using multitemporal Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 imagery. Additionally, an analysis of fluvial landforms was conducted to estimate sediment dynamics during the flash flood.
This final project was conducted on the main stretch of the Jambo Aye River using imagery acquired before the flash flood on August 6, 2025, and after the flash flood on February 22, 2026. The two images were combined into a multiband dataset for water body classification using the Random Forest algorithm. The classification results were validated using a confusion matrix based on PlanetScope and Google Earth imagery. The river channels extracted from the water bodies were then converted into riverbank and segmented into the main channel, first branches, and second branches. Changes in riverbank position were calculated using the Net Shoreline Movement (NSM) in the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), separately for the right and left banks. In addition, fluvial landforms were interpreted through on-screen digitization to analyze their relationship with changes in the riverbanks.
The results show that a combination of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 imagery can detect water bodies around the Jambo Aye River. The overall accuracy of the validation results was 94% during the pre-flood period and 95% during the post-flood period. Based on bank location, changes in the riverbanks were predominantly caused by erosion, accounting for 59.06% on the right bank and 55.48% on the left bank. Based on river channel segmentation, the greatest changes in riverbanks occurred in the main channel segment. Changes in this segment were also predominantly caused by erosion, with an average change of -3.43 meters on the right bank and -3.50 meters on the left bank. However, the maximum values of riverbank changes in this segment reached 285.76 meters and 291.97 meters. This indicates that riverbank changes are not evenly distributed but are concentrated in specific sections. These changes have an impact on development of fluvial landforms. This is evidenced by the formation of chutes cut-off and sediment deposits in the floodplain, as well as changes in point bars and oxbow lakes. These findings indicate changes in channel conditions and material distribution during the galodo flood, which occurred not only within the active river channel but also across the floodplain.
