Cultural
terms translation involves the preservation of source culture and the dominance
of target culture in target text. This process called resistance and
negotiation in translation, which are the solution to translate two different
cultures. This study examines the resistance and negotiation of Indonesian
children’s cultural identity in children’s storybooks which translated into
English. Resistance in translation refers to Venuti’s theory (2008), while
negotiation based on Eco’s theory (2004). Piaget’s (1952) Theory of cognitive
development is employed to consider the accessibility of translated cultural
terms related to children’s cognitive abilities at different developmental
stages and book level. This study aims to identify the categories of cultural
terms, patterns of resistance and negotiation, and their implications. The data
consist of cultural words, phrases, and sentences analyzed using descriptive
qualitative method and comparative technique. The results show that resistance
and negotiation of Indonesian children’s cultural identity occur most
frequently in the category of material culture. It corresponds with children
cognitive ability, which is closely associated with their understanding of
concrete concepts. Resistance and negotiation produce patterns in which form
and meaning are either changed or preserve, resulting different degrees of
cultural resistance. Resistance and negotiation implicate three main aspects:
cultural representation, target reader accommodation, and translation
equivalence or distortion of meaning. These aspects are related to children’s
cognitive abilities.
