Parangtritis Sand Dunes are a geoheritage area formed through aeolian processes that depend primarily on wind, sediment transport, and land cover conditions. One of the factors influencing the dynamics of the sand dunes is the coastal green belt vegetation, which functions as a windbreak but may also accelerate dune degradation by obstructing the natural wind corridor. Information regarding the spatial changes in green belt and sand distribution over the past decade, as well as the indication of the green belt's role as a windbreak, remains limited. Therefore, this final project aims to map the spatial changes in green belt and sand distribution and analyze the indicative role of the green belt as a barrier to sand movement in the study area in 2017, 2021, and 2026 using Sentinel-2 Level-2A imagery.

This study utilized Sentinel-2 Level-2A imagery as the primary data source. The processing workflow included image pre-processing, calculation of spectral indices (NDVI, NDMI, NDBI, BSI, and MNDWI), and land cover classification using the Random Forest algorithm implemented in ESA SNAP software. The classification results were evaluated using Overall Accuracy (OA), followed by multitemporal land cover change analysis using the change detection method. The role of the green belt as a windbreak was analyzed using the leeward buffer approach in relation to the dominant wind direction.

The classification results achieved Overall Accuracy values of 85.20% for both 2017 and 2021, and 86.00% for 2026. The change detection analysis indicated that, during the 2017–2026 period, the green belt area decreased by 9.22 ha, the sand area decreased by 40.99 ha, while other vegetation increased by 70.44 ha. Wind analysis showed that the dominant wind direction was from southeast to northwest, with a frequency of approximately 31%. The leeward buffer analysis revealed that the sand area within the leeward zone tended to be smaller than that within the windward zone, particularly in 2026, with differences of 3.895 ha, 4.581 ha, and 4.143 ha for the 100 m, 200 m, and 500 m buffer distances, respectively. These findings indicate that the green belt plays a potential role as a windbreak that influences sand distribution within the Parangtritis Sand Dunes Geoheritage area, although sand distribution is also affected by other land cover changes.
