This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the sustainability rankings of universities in Indonesia- including university size, female rector, university age, and university type- with revenue and research performance as control variables. This study employed a quantitative approach using panel data regression analysis of 37 universities in Indonesia that consistently participated in the UI GreenMetric ranking during the 2022–2024 period, yielding 111 observations. The research data consisted of secondary data obtained from university financial reports, official university websites, UI GreenMetric, and SINTA. The data were analyzed using panel data regression with the Fixed Effect Model (FEM). The results show that university age and research performance have a positive and significant effect on university sustainability rankings. In contrast, university size, the presence of a female rector, university type, and revenue do not have a significant effect on sustainability rankings.

This study has several limitations. First, the sample was restricted to universities that consistently participated in UI GreenMetric throughout the research period. Second, the analysis relied heavily on institutional characteristics as the key determinants. Finally, the model’s Adjusted R² value of 0.52 indicates that other factors beyond those examined may affect sustainability rankings. The findings provide empirical contributions to the higher education sustainability literature by demonstrating that institutional maturity and research capacity are more influential in improving sustainability rankings than financial capacity, leadership characteristics, or university type in Indonesia.
