This study investigates how UK broadsheet match reports use conceptual metaphor to construct the tactical identities of two contrasting Premier League teams, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, during the 2024/25 season. Drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980; Kövecses, 2010) and Semino's (2008) account of systematic metaphor patterns in discourse, the study addresses a gap in existing football-metaphor research, namely the absence of a controlled comparison capable of isolating tactical identity, rather than team reputation or competitive success, as a variable influencing source domain selection. A parallel corpus of match reports from The Guardian and The Times was compiled, and metaphorical verb lexical units were identified using the Metaphor Identification Procedure (Pragglejaz Group, 2007) and coded for source domain. The analysis finds that conceptual metaphor is distributed unevenly across the corpus: WAR is the dominant source domain for both teams, but is proportionally more frequent, and more consistently combative in character, in Nottingham Forest's coverage, where it spans finishing, pressing, and defending, whereas for Manchester City, WAR instead constructs an already-secured dominance and is joined by ART, a domain applied almost exclusively to City's play across theatre, music, and craft subtypes. These findings extend Kövecses' highlighting and hiding principle from the level of source domain selection to the level of its internal variation within a single domain, and provide direct textual evidence for a relationship between team identity and metaphor choice that had previously been proposed, but not tested through a controlled design, in existing scholarship (Yusuf, 2018). The study concludes that football journalism's metaphors do not merely describe tactical identity, but help construct an unequal hierarchy of tactical legitimacy between teams.
