Slab concrete casting using ready-mixed concrete (RMC) requires synchronization between truck mixer arrivals and concrete pump readiness. Delivery inaccuracy may lead to truck mixer queuing, concrete pump idling, increased fuel consumption, CO2e emissions, and disruption of operational continuity assessed through discharge time and cold joint gap as supplementary timestamp-based checks. This study analyzes slab concrete casting duration using Monte Carlo simulation and the JIT principle, with emphasis on how truck mixer dispatch patterns can be evaluated in a simpler form for field application.
The research method employed discrete-event simulation modeling in AnyLogic across four scenarios: Baseline, JIT Empirical, MC Stochastic, and MC-JIT. The empirical data comprised 113 actual trips across seven casting cycles with a total volume of 720 m³. The Baseline scenario used the project's actual timestamps, whereas JIT Empirical recalculated dispatch times so that truck mixer arrivals approached concrete pump readiness. MC Stochastic applied empirical donor/block resampling to preserve departure, unloading, return, and headway patterns, with empirical custom distribution as a fallback when a suitable donor package was unavailable. MC-JIT then combined JIT-based dispatch decisions with stochastic duration realizations, allowing an assessment of whether the JIT strategy remained effective under uncertain operational conditions.
The results show that the Baseline still exhibited inefficiencies, with an average truck mixer queuing duration of 11.61 minutes/trip and pump idle time of 3.20 minutes/trip. JIT Empirical yielded the maximum efficiency potential by deterministically eliminating queuing and idling, increasing productivity from 3.573 to 3.866 m³/hour, and reducing fuel consumption from 3,413.92 to 3,194.46 liters. Under stochastic conditions, MC Stochastic demonstrated that duration variability could worsen system performance. Compared with MC Stochastic, the selected MC-JIT configuration reduced queuing duration from 14.94 to 5.48 minutes/trip, fuel consumption from 3,464.38 to 3,364.00 liters/run, and emissions from 9,384.10 to 9,112.18 kg CO2e/run, although concrete pump idle time increased from 2.17 to 3.83 minutes/trip. The final comparison using the productivity-cost index (P/C) showed JIT Empirical had the highest P/C (85.94), followed by the selected MC-JIT (71.68) and MC Stochastic (66.98). Thus, the application of JIT to RMC distribution has the potential to improve efficiency, but its effectiveness depends strongly on the accuracy of duration estimation, dispatch-time control, and the timely updating of field operational information.
