Enhancing thermal effectiveness in power generation is a key pillar in Indonesia’s roadmap toward achieving Net Zero Emission by 2060. In Combined Cycle Power Plant, which provide substantial operational flexibility, the Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger (STHE) plays a critical role in sustaining overall thermal performance. Improvements in STHE effectiveness can be achieved through various approaches, one of which involves modifying the baffle geometry to enhance heat transfer characteristics. This study aims to numerically investigate the effects of varying the cut ratio and pitch of folded segmental baffles on the thermohydraulic performance of a STHE.

The method used in this study is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation using ANSYS Fluent with the Realizable k-? turbulence model. The modified baffle geometry is a folded segmental baffle with a folding angle of 150°. The independent variables include baffle cut ratios of 15%, 20%, and 25% of the shell diameter, as well as baffle spacing represented by the number of baffles, namely 13, 19, and 25 baffles. The analyzed parameters include temperature distribution, pressure distribution, flow velocity distribution, heat transfer rate, heat transfer coefficient, effectiveness, and pressure drop. The simulation model was validated against field data, with a maximum deviation of 9.43%, which is still within the acceptable tolerance range and indicates that the model is suitable for variation simulations.

The simulation results show that a smaller baffle cut ratio and a higher number of baffles can improve the thermal performance of the STHE, as the shell-side flow is more frequently directed across the tube bundle. The configuration with 25 baffles and a 15?ffle cut ratio produced the highest thermal performance, with a shell outlet temperature of 36.16°C, a heat transfer rate of 2499.43 kW, a heat transfer coefficient of 4.36 kW/m²°C, and an effectiveness of 26.53%. However, this configuration also resulted in the highest pressure drop of 289.508 Pa. Considering the balance between thermal performance and pressure loss, the configuration with 25 baffles and a 25?ffle cut ratio can be considered the most optimal thermohydraulic configuration among all simulated cases, as it still provides good thermal performance with a lower pressure drop of 74.873 Pa.
