Selanjutnya memasuki fase tektonik pasif yaitu post-rift berlangsung hingga Miosen tengah sehingga nilai ekstensi sangat minim yaitu sebesar 0% - 0,8%, terendapkan Formasi Mengala, Formasi Sihapas, dan Formasi Telisa.
The South Bengkalis Sub-basin is a sub-basin located within the Central Sumatra Basin. Research into the formation dynamics of the South Bengkalis Sub-basin and its surroundings is of strategic importance due to its location within the Malacca Strait Working Area, a region with significant hydrocarbon potential. Consequently, a palinspastic reconstruction was conducted to determine the tectonic evolution of the area. The formation of the South Bengkalis Sub-basin began with a syn-rift phase (Middle Eocene – Late Oligocene), which established the sub-basin's geometry with extension values ranging from 0.3% to 25%; during this time, the Basal Clastic, Brown Shale, and Pematang Formations were deposited, influenced by the Bengkalis, Merbau, and Air Hitam Normal Faults. This was followed by a passive tectonic phase—the post-rift stage—lasting until the Middle Miocene, characterized by minimal extension (0% – 0.8%) and the deposition of the Mengala, Sihapas, and Telisa Formations. Subsequently, basin dynamics from the Middle Miocene to the Present were controlled by compressional forces that caused inversion along the Padang Fault, resulting in shortening values of 1.6% – 3.3% and the deposition of the Petani and Minas Formations; this phase was influenced by the Padang and Lalang Faults as well as the reactivation of the Air Hitam Fault. This compressional tectonism served as the primary factor determining changes in secondary hydrocarbon migration pathways. Hydrocarbons expelled from source rocks during the Pliocene migrated toward structural traps formed by compressional tectonics—specifically the Lalang Fault trap (a wrench fault) and the Padang Fault fold (a compressive block)—while in the Recent epoch, hydrocarbons migrated further toward the Air Hitam Fault structure, which geometrically forms a structural high associated with a wrench fault.
