Black tea polyphenols are known to have strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activity has an effect against the development of erythema due to skin irritation caused by chemical agents, mainly sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) which is usually found in personal care products. The research design is a double blind randomized controlled trial, with a placebo as a control. Skin erythema and trans-epidermal water loss is measured respectively using Chromameter and TEWA meter. For the Chromameter, only a* which represents erythema was measured throughout the research. Thirty five subjects were involved in this research. Each subject's back is rubbed with black tea cream in concentrations of 2.5%, 5% and 10%. After 20 minutes, skin irritation is induced with SLS 0.5%. This is followed by an occlusion. meter On the first day, baseline measurement using Chromameter and TEWA is done. On the third, fourth and fifth day, skin erythema and trans-epidermal water loss is measured, again using Chromameter and TEWA meter. Statistical analysis is done using One Way Anova. The results show that black tea cream in all concentrations does not have a preventive effect on erythema response and trans-epidermal water loss. From this we can conclude that black tea cream, in all three concentrations has ?? effect against preventing erythema and epidermal water loss caused by 3LS.
