Corrosion of pipeline steels remains one of the most critical challenges in the oil and gas industry because it degrades operational reliability and results in substantial economic losses. Among the predominant corrosion mechanisms, sweet corrosion induced by carbonic acid (H?CO?), which forms through the dissolution of CO? in production fluids, is particularly significant. The widespread use of conventional corrosion inhibitors has raised increasing environmental and occupational safety concerns, highlighting the need for sustainable and environmentally benign alternatives. Gambier (Uncaria gambir) extract was selected in this study because it is rich in phytochemical constituents, including tannins, catechins, quercetin, saponins, and flavonoids, which are known to exhibit corrosion-inhibiting properties. The primary objective of this research was to investigate the inhibition performance and adsorption mechanism of gambier extract as a standalone green inhibitor and to elucidate its synergistic interactions with potassium iodide (KI), imidazole (IM), and sodium tungstate (Na?WO?) for enhanced corrosion protection.

The experiments were conducted at 25 °C under atmospheric pressure using API 5L X65 carbon steel as the test material. The corrosive medium consisted of 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution prepared in accordance with ASTM G44 and supplemented with 100 ppm NaHCO? to simulate bicarbonate-containing brine capable of generating carbonic acid under pipeline service conditions. Gambier leaves were initially extracted to obtain the bioactive compounds employed as corrosion inhibitors. The chemical characteristics of the extract were examined using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy to identify the functional groups and phytochemical constituents responsible for adsorption onto the steel surface. Corrosion inhibition performance was evaluated electrochemically using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with gambier extract (GE) concentrations of 50, 100, 300, 500, 700, and 1000 ppm. The synergistic effects were investigated by combining 300 ppm KI, IM, or Na?WO? with different GE concentrations. After exposure, the corroded steel surfaces were characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to assess surface morphology, corrosion products, and protective film formation.

The results demonstrate that gambier extract substantially reduced the corrosion rate of API 5L X65 steel from 0.949 mmpy in the uninhibited solution to 0.098 mmpy at an optimum concentration of 700 ppm GE, corresponding to a 89.7% reduction. EIS measurements exhibited a consistent trend, with the highest inhibition efficiency of 90.5% obtained at the same concentration. The enhanced corrosion resistance was attributed to the adsorption of phytochemical molecules onto the steel surface through a combination of physisorption and chemisorption, resulting in the formation of a protective barrier that restricted direct contact between the steel substrate and aggressive species, including chloride ions and water molecules. Adsorption behavior followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with a standard Gibbs free energy of adsorption (?G°ads) of -27.54 kJ mol?¹, indicating spontaneous adsorption involving both physical and chemical interactions. Increasing GE concentration also increased the charge-transfer resistance (Rct), which was directly correlated with polarization resistance (Rp). At 700 ppm GE, the Rct and Rp values reached 463.90 and 531.11 ?·cm², respectively. The adsorption mechanism was further confirmed through FT-IR, FESEM, XRD, and AFM analyses. FT-IR spectra revealed characteristic absorption bands on the immersed steel surface corresponding to those of the gambier extract, confirming molecular adsorption. FESEM and AFM observations showed that steel specimens exposed to the chloride-carbonate solution containing GE exhibited smoother and more homogeneous surfaces with considerably less corrosion damage than specimens immersed without inhibitor. The improved surface integrity was attributed to the formation of an adsorbed protective film that effectively suppressed electron transfer, consistent with the increased Rct values. Potentiodynamic polarization analysis further indicated that gambier extract acted as a mixed-type inhibitor by simultaneously suppressing both anodic metal dissolution and cathodic reduction reactions.

The incorporation of gambier extract with synthetic inhibitors produced pronounced synergistic effects under appropriate conditions. The combination of 100 ppm GE and 300 ppm KI achieved an inhibition efficiency of 96.63% with a synergism parameter (S) of 1.83. The mixture containing 300 ppm GE and 300 ppm IM provided the highest inhibition efficiency of 97.72% with an S value of 1.35, whereas the combination of 300 ppm GE and 300 ppm Na?WO? yielded an inhibition efficiency of 97.28% with an S value of 1.13. Synergism parameters greater than unity confirmed positive interactions among the inhibitor components, leading to superior surface protection compared with their individual performance. This synergistic behavior is attributed to the cooperative action of gambier polyphenols, which adsorb onto the steel surface through hydroxyl and aromatic functional groups, while KI and Na?WO? enhance the compactness and stability of the protective layer through ionic adsorption and passive film formation. In the presence of imidazole, a denser and more coherent protective film was formed, resulting in higher charge-transfer resistance and a substantial reduction in corrosion rate. Qualitative evidence from FESEM and AFM analyses supported these findings, revealing smoother surfaces with fewer corrosion products for all synergistic formulations, consistent with the increased Rct values. Overall, gambier extract, either as an individual inhibitor or in synergistic combination with KI, IM, or Na?WO?, exhibits considerable potential as a sustainable corrosion inhibitor for oil and gas pipeline applications. Nevertheless, further validation under representative field operating conditions is required prior to industrial implementation.
