Global reliance on fossil fuels for domestic water heating drives substantial energy demand of approximately 315 EJ and generated around 2,100 Mt of direct CO? emissions, thereby exacerbating the global climate crisis. Renewable energy has emerged as a promising alternative to reduce this dependence. However, its intermittent nature often causes a mismatch between energy supply and demand. Thermal energy storage (TES) system based on latent heat present an efficient solution to overcome this challenge. This study aims to design, manufacture, and evaluate the performance of a thermal energy storage system employing a horizontal induction heater using Stearic acid as the Phase Change Material (PCM). The parameters investigated include PCM volume fractions of 75%, 85%, and 95% during a constant 600 W charging process, and Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) flow rates of 2 LPM, 3 LPM, and 4 LPM during the discharging process. Theoretical design determined that a water heating energy requirement of 3.27 MJ with a total required stearic acid mass of 14.53 kg. The system was designed with a 25 × 25 × 33 cm rectangular steel-plate container integrated with a ½-inch copper pipe as the HTF channel. Experimental results showed that increasing the PCM volume fraction from 75% to 95% significantly extended the charging time from 95 minutes to 150 minutes and further to 275 minutes, due to the increasing sensible and latent heat requirements. Conversely, during discharging, increasing the HTF flow rate from 2 LPM to 4 LPM accelerated the attainment of thermal equilibrium. Throughout this process, the outlet fluid temperature started in the range of 43 to 53°C and gradually decreased toward the inlet temperature of 29°C.
