Parenting by female prisoners is an experience that takes place within a complex context, influenced by institutional constraints, social stigma and the demands of simultaneously fulfilling the dual roles of mother and prisoner. This study aims to understand the experiences of female prisoners at the Yogyakarta Class IIB Women’s Prison in raising their children whilst in prison, from pregnancy and childbirth through to breastfeeding and the introduction of complementary foods, meeting the children’s needs, and the social support they receive whilst serving their sentences.
This study employs a qualitative approach using Husserlian phenomenology. The research informants comprised two female prisoners who met the study criteria, specifically those who had experience of caring for their own children whilst in prison. The limited number of informants reflects the limitations of data on raising children while incarcerated at the time the research was conducted. Nevertheless, the experiences of female prisoners are an important issue that needs to be highlighted and rarely receives serious attention. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation, and were subsequently analysed using Clark and Moustakas’s (1994) analytical technique. This study utilised Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of development and Goffman’s concept of the total institution as complementary frameworks to understand the parenting experience within the context of the prison system.
The research findings indicate that parenting within prisons does not take place as an individual and natural practice, but rather as a process of negotiation influenced by various personal, social and institutional factors. The experiences of both informants demonstrate that differences in marital status, number of children, health conditions during pregnancy, socio-economic background, family support, and the context of the COVID-19 pandemic all contribute to the variations in their parenting experiences. Despite being in highly restricted conditions, both informants continued to strive to maintain emotional closeness, meet their children’s basic needs, and develop adaptive strategies through support from family, fellow prisoners, and prison staff. The findings of this study indicate that the parenting practices of female prisoners are the result of a complex interplay between the mothers’ individual capacities, their social support networks, and the institutional structures governing life within the prison.
