The increasing demand for sustainable energy storage devices has driven the development of biomass-derived electrode materials with high electrochemical performance. Palm kernel shells (PKS) are an abundant biomass waste that can potentially be utilized as a precursor for porous carbon in supercapacitor applications. This study aimed to synthesize and evaluate the effects of phytic acid (PA) incorporation on the physicochemical characteristics and electrochemical performance of PANI-PA/C-PKS nanocomposites as a supercapacitor electrode materials. The PANI-PA/C-PKS nanocomposites were synthesize via in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization using an optimum PANI:PA molar ratio of 5:1. PA was employed as an environmentally friendly dopant and physical cross-linker to modify the ial interactions between polyaniline (PANI) and porous carbon and to enhance the electrochemical properties of the electrode material. Characterization using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brunauer -Emmet-Teller (BET) analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), electrical conductivity measurements, and water contact angle measurements confirmed the formation of the nanocomposites, as evidenced by changes in surface morphology, the presence of characteristic functional groups associated with the constituent materials, enhanced thermal stability, and alterations in surface wettability. Electrochemical evalution using cyclic voltammetry (CV) demonstrated that PA incorporation enhanced the pseudocapacitive respons of the electrode material, as indicated by the increased CV curve area and the presence of redox peaks that were retained across various scan rates, suggesting reversible redox reactions and favorable charge-transfer kinetics. The PANI-PA/C-PKS nanocomposites containing 5 wt% PANI exhibited a specific capacitance of 740.22 F g-1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s-1, representing an approximately 52.43% improvement compared with the PANI/C-PKS nanocomposites containing the same PANI loading without PA., which exhibited a specific capacitance 485.61 F g-1. In addition, the electrical conductivity increased from 0.0339 to 0.00439 S cm-1, despite a decreased in the specific surface area to 107.70 m2 g-1. These results demonstrate that the incorporation of PA as an environmentally friendly dopant can effectively enhance the electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance of biomass-derived nanocomposites, highlighting its potential as a sustainable strategy for the development of high-performance supercapacitor electrode matrials.
