Masama District, Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi is composed of ultramafic rocks of the East Sulawesi Ophiolite Complex, giving it potential for nickel laterite deposits. Exploration in greenfield areas requires an efficient method for identifying limonite zones, one of which is multispectral remote sensing. The objectives are to analyse the surface spectral characteristics of Landsat 9 OLI and Sentinel-2 MSI imagery, to evaluate the effectiveness of band ratio and spectral indices in identifying limonite zones, and to evaluate the spatial accuracy and correlation with field geological and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) geochemical data. The research stages were surface geological mapping and test pit sampling, petrographic and XRF analyses, image processing, supervised classification, and accuracy assessment. The method used was the integration of primary and secondary data analysed using ArcGIS Pro 3.5.3 software. The parameters used are the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with a 0.5 threshold for vegetation masking, the Iron Oxide Index (Band 4/Band 2 ratio) with a 1.2 threshold indicating iron oxide anomalies, and a 19-layer feature composite of 12 Sentinel-2 and 7 Landsat 9 bands classified using Random Trees. The mapping results show three geomorphological units (fracture zone hills, erotiated wavy hills, and fluvial plain) and three lithological units (peridotite, wackestone, and gravely sand deposits). Points classified as limonite zones have an average Fe content of 23.26% compared with 8.44% at non-limonite points. Variable importance analysis shows Sentinel-2 contributes 74.9% and Landsat 9 25.1% to the model decision, with Red-Edge bands as the most influential variables. Validation against 20 independent test points yielded an Overall Accuracy of 90.00%, a Kappa Coefficient of 0.76 (Substantial Agreement), and a Producer's Accuracy of 100% for the limonite class. The integration of both images with Random Trees reliably delineates limonite zones, although the detected zone indicates a surface laterite profile rather than nickel reserves.
