The Labuhan Hajad Parangkusumo tradition is one of the cultural heritages of the Yogyakarta Sultanate that embodies religious, social, and philosophical values in Javanese society. Amid the development of modernization, this tradition faces challenges in the form of changing perspectives among society, which may potentially diminish the understanding and significance of the values embedded within it. This study aims to explore the existential subjective meaning of the Labuhan Hajad tradition through the perspective of Martin Heidegger’s phenomenological hermeneutics by examining the lived experiences of the abdi dalem of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, the meaning of the tradition as Being-in-the-World, and the symbols and language that represent Dasein within the tradition.
This study employs a qualitative approach using Martin Heidegger’s phenomenological hermeneutics. The research was conducted in the area of the Yogyakarta Sultanate and Parangkusumo Beach, involving informants who possess knowledge of and participate in the implementation of the Labuhan Hajad tradition. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and were subsequently analyzed using Heidegger’s phenomenological hermeneutic process through the pre-understanding structures of Vorhabe, Vorsicht, and Vorgriff to interpret three aspects: the meaning of existential subjective experience, the form of Being-in-the-World, and the meaning of symbols and language in the implementation of the tradition.
The first finding shows that the Labuhan Hajad Parangkusumo tradition is understood not merely as a cultural ritual, but also as an existential experience that reveals the relationship between human beings, God, nature, and others. The second finding indicates that the informants, particularly the abdi dalem of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, experience Dasein in a manner that can be understood as Being-in-the-World. The third finding demonstrates that the symbols and language accompanying the implementation of the tradition serve as manifestations of Dasein, expressing values of gratitude, respect, togetherness, responsibility, and the continuity of cultural heritage. Through Martin Heidegger’s phenomenological hermeneutics, this study demonstrates that the meaning of the Labuhan Hajad Parangkusumo tradition continues to be experienced and transmitted as a form of human existence that is always situated within its historical, social, and spiritual world.
