Research and development of SCRAMJET engine technology have led to the requirement of combustion stability in which a very short residence time of air-fuel mixture exists due to the supersonic airflow condition. One of the methods used to enhance that stability is by occupying fuel injection behind a backward-facing step. In the presence of such device, the mixing efficiency is improved by means of recirculation region created behind the step. Objective of this study is to determine how step height ($h$) and injection distance ($D$) affect the flow field characteristics, as well as the recirculation region. This research is conducted by numerical simulation using commercial CFD software FLUENT, with SST K-$\omega$ turbulence model. The chosen case is transverse injection of gaseous hydrogen at 300 kPa into Mach 3 airflow. Test cases are simulated for $D = 15$, 30, and 45 mm. Step height, $h$, is varied in such order to fulfill the conditions of $D/h = 15$, 7.5, 5, and 3.75. All the cases are simulated in cold flow condition. Results of this study shows that the increase of step height tends to weaken the bow shock that is occurred near the hydrogen injection. Furthermore, as the step height increases, two vortices in recirculation region intersect each other. In other hand, injection distance, D, gives effect in the formation of shear layer and expansion fan behind step. In cases with D/h>5, two vortices in recirculation region separate each other distinctively.
