In wastewater treatment, aeration consumes up to 48% of
total electrical energy because conventional diffusers generate macro-bubbles
with high rising velocity, leading to short contact time and inefficient oxygen
transfer. This study examines Microbubble Generator (MBG) of venturi and
porous-venturi types as an alternative to conventional diffusers which are prone
to clogging. Unlike passive diffusers, the venturi MBG utilizes turbulence and
shear stress from high-velocity liquid flow to actively break bubbles into
microbubbles, thereby enlarging the specific surface area and extending
residence time. The experiment varied two tank geometries (vertical and
horizontal), two aerator types (Venturi and Porous-Venturi), and five gas flow
rates (QG 0.3–1.5L/min) at a fixed liquid flow rate. The
unsteady-state reaeration method, following the ASCE (2007) standard, was applied
in a 200L test tank, where dissolved oxygen (DO) was continuously measured
until saturation to obtain the oxygen transfer curve. Performance was evaluated
using KLa, SOTR, and SAE parameters, and analyzed statistically at a
95% confidence level. The Vertical Porous (VP) configuration at QG
1.5L/min exhibited the best performance, with KLa of 2.54h?¹, SOTR
of 0.00461kgO?/h, and SAE of 0.0585 kgO?/kWh. The porous media exerted a more
dominant influence than geometry, with Porous-Venturi significantly outperforming
standard Venturi at QG ? 0.9 L/min (p < 0>G 1.2L/min, with KLa and SOTR decreasing by
14.7% and 14.6%, respectively, attributed to bubble coalescence in horizontal
flow. The maximum KLa of the MBG (2.54h?¹) is competitive with
advanced diffusers such as ceramic diffusers (3.69h?¹) and porous tubes
(2.24h?¹). Economically, MBG utilization saves annual electricity costs by Rp
193.9 million (76%) compared to conventional blowers, with the total investment
and operational cost in the first year reaching only 24% of the total blower
cost. Therefore, the Porous-Venturi MBG is feasible to be developed as an
efficient and flexible aeration alternative.
