Background: The use of long-acting contraceptive methods (LACMs) remains lower than that of short-acting methods, despite their high effectiveness rates. One factor contributing to this situation is suboptimal patient involvement in the decision-making process, which can affect satisfaction and the continuity of contraceptive use. The Shared Decision Making (SDM) approach is a key strategy for improving the quality of patient-centered care.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between shared decision-making and patient satisfaction in choosing long-acting contraception.
Methods: This study employed a mixed methods approach using an explanatory sequential design, including a cross-sectional quantitative study of 117 participants using the SDM-Q-9 (9-item Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire) and the PCCC (Person-Centered Contraceptive Counseling) scales, followed by Pearsons correlation analysis. The qualitative method was conducted through in-depth interviews with 24 informants consisting of 8 patients and 16 health workers. The study was conducted from June to October 2025 at health facilities in Laweyan District, Surakarta City.
Results: There was a significant positive correlation between Shared Decision Making (SDM) and patient satisfaction (r = 0.343; p < 0>
Qualitative findings reinforce these results, indicating that healthcare providers competence, communication effectiveness, spousal support, and sociocultural factors also influence the quality of Shared Decision Making (SDM) implementation.
Conclusion: There is a relationship between Shared Decision Making (SDM) and patient satisfaction in choosing a long-acting contraceptive method. Therefore, optimizing communication and adopting a patient-centered approach are necessary to improve the quality of care and ensure the continued use of long-acting contraceptives.
