Municipal solid waste gasification produces condensate that is commonly discarded as wastewater although it still contains a condensed organic fraction known as tar. This study characterized tar obtained through condensate pyrolysis, evaluated the effect of the condensate to dichloromethane (DCM) ratio in the Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE) method, determined the best ratio with its precision and limitations, characterized the LLE tar at the selected ratio, and compared the chemical characteristics of both products.

The condensate came from a gasification-based waste-to-energy plant in Surakarta, Indonesia. Extraction used 200 mL of condensate at two condensate-to-DCM ratios, 2:1 and 4:3, each with three replications, evaluated through gravimetry, descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, Levene's test, and an Independent Sample t-test, while chemical characterization used FTIR and GC-MS.

The 4:3 ratio yielded a residue mass of 100.71 ± 40.74 mg, a content of 503.55 mg/L, and a solvent efficiency of 0.671 mg/mL, higher than the 2:1 ratio at 52.12 ± 10.00 mg, 260.60 mg/L, and 0.521 mg/mL, yet the difference was not significant (t value 2.006 against a critical value of 2.776), with the coefficient of variation rising from 19% to 40%. FTIR and GC-MS revealed that the LLE residue was dominated by water and residual DCM at 86.02% relative area, caused by the absence of an organic-phase drying step, whereas the pyrolysis tar was dominated by C10–C16 aliphatic hydrocarbons at 95.11% relative area without hydroxyl or carbonyl groups. The 4:3 ratio is therefore reported as a practically selected treatment rather than a statistically proven optimum, and the pyrolysis tar more closely resembles a fuel fraction although physicochemical testing remains necessary.
