Coal mine runoff wastewater contains suspended solids and heavy metals that have the potential to pollute the environment. Ozonation technology has been proven effective in oxidizing pollutants, however its application is still predominantly in batch systems, which are less representative of field conditions. This study aims to analyze and redesign a coal mine sludge WWTP prototype through a reverse engineering approach by evaluating hydraulic parameters in a continuous ozonation system. The research began with the identification of the existing reactor dimensions and measurement of initial hydraulic parameters. Flow rate and HRT variations (1,2, and 3 hours) were determined based on previous batch system studies. Hydraulic parameter calculations included horizontal velocity, surface loading, hydraulic power, ozonation power, mixing intensity, and particle settling kinetics. Verification was conducted through laboratory tests using artificial samples with TSS concretation 10.000 mg/L using a gravity filter and filtrate turbidity parameter measurements. The results showed that hydraulic power was very small compared to ozonation power, so the total power dominance came from the ozonation process. The G.t values for ozonation met the requirements across all HRT variations, while G.t for flocculation met the requirements is at HRT of 1,04 – 3,45 hours. Visual observations indicated that no excessive sedimentation occured in the ozonation compartment due to turbulence from the diffuser. Filtration tests showed the best turbidity reduction at HRT 3 hours with 94,6?ficiency in the initial ozonation period. The continuous reactor with HRT 3 hours produced the most optimal performance and the redesign focused on optimizing hydraulic parameters.
