This research is titled "The Ontological Status of Artifacts from Amie L. Thomasson’s Perspective: Contextualizing the Existence of Waste as a Product." It aims to describe the ontological status of artifacts according to Amie L. Thomasson, analyze the existence of waste as a product within ontological discourse, and contextualize the concept of the artifact in relation to the existential condition of waste. The material object of this study is the existence of waste as a product, while the formal object is the concept of the artifact from Amie L. Thomasson’s perspective. This study falls under the category of historical-factual philosophical research focused on a specific figure. More specifically, it employs a methodology combining a literature review with conceptual analysis. The literature review process comprises ten stages: planning, defining the research scope, literature searching, title selection, document retrieval, comprehensive selection, data extraction, quality assessment, analysis and synthesis, and the writing and editing process. The research methodology incorporates philosophical approaches such as interpretation, holism, and heuristics. The conceptual analysis component consists of five stages: formulating conceptual questions, testing arguments through open-ended questions, deconstructing or simplifying concepts, aligning with common sense, and conceptual clarification.. This study draws several conclusions. First, Amie L. Thomasson holds an intentionalist view regarding the ontological status of artifacts, regarding them as objects situated at the intersection of natural kinds and social kinds. An object qualifies as an artifact if the creator possesses an intention regarding the object and if the object retains functional value throughout its existence. Second, the study concludes that waste existing as a product is an object marginalized from both natural kinds and social kinds; its existence is determined not by its inherent physical properties, but by human judgment viewing it as unwanted material or as having lost its utility. Third, the existence of waste as a product can be contextualized as an artifact if and only if the waste is classified as solid waste. In terms of its existential status, waste is a human intentional construct that emerges when humans withdraw the intentional and functional ontological commitments that previously defined the object. The contextualization of Amie L. Thomasson’s concept of artifacts regarding the existence of waste is categorized into three patterns: Unintentional Byproduct (a byproduct lacking an initial specific intention), Function Transformation (the loss of an original function giving way to the potential for a new one), and Archaeological Object (waste from the past bearing historical traces).
