West and Central Kalimantan serve as critical habitat of Pongo p. pygmaeus and Pongo p. wurmbii. However, both regions experience the highest rates of deforestation across Borneo that exert severe pressure on orangutan habitat. This study was conducted to analyse the structural and functional landscape of the habitat which represent key determinants of orangutan viability amidst anthropogenic pressures. Habitat suitability model was constructed by using the MaxEnt algorithm, landscape structure was analysed by using Fragstats, and corridor was identified by using Least Cost Path (LCP).

The MaxEnt results demonstrated that the suitable habitat distribution of Pongo. p. pygmaeus covers 1,049,955 ha representing 16.7% of its geographic range, whereas Pongo. p. wurmbii encompasses 8,897,129 ha, approximately 37.9% of its respective geographic range. The habitats of both subspecies constitute a minority within the overall landscape, fragmented and face high anthropogenic risks. By applying 1,000 m edge depth, edge effects eliminate the majority of the habitats, leaving only 16% of core area of Pongo. p. pygmaeus and 52% core area of Pongo. p. wurmbii that unaffected by negative edge impacts. The habitats of Pongo. p. pygmaeus and Pongo. p. wurmbii are divided into isolated subpopulations, totalling 21 subpopulations of Pongo. p. pygmaeus and 76 subpopulations of Pongo. p. wurmbii. Moreover, the LCP analysis revealed a critical lack of connectivity. This research identified only 1 potential corridor for Pongo. p. pygmaeus and 17 potential corridors for Pongo. p. wurmbii to connect habitat fragments within subpopulations. This indicates that some habitat fragments assessed as viable habitats to support the long term viability of both subspecies are isolated within disconnected subpopulations.
