Road pavement material technology continues to develop toward the utilization of local materials that not only meet technical performance requirements but are also sustainable and environmentally friendly. One local material with significant potential is pure Asbuton, which is known for its high thermal stability and resistance to environmental degradation. This study aims to analyze the performance of pure Asbuton as a tack coat material at the interlayer between the AC-Wearing Course and rigid pavement.
This study focuses on evaluating tack coat performance as a hot-applied material based on several key parameters affecting interlayer shear strength (ISS), namely tack coat application rate, testing temperature variations of 25°C and 60°C, and applied vertical normal stresses of 0.25 MPa and 0.4 MPa. Laboratory testing was conducted using the Leutner Shear Device to obtain the shear strength of Asbuton at the interface between the AC-Wearing Course and rigid pavement. The results were then compared with those obtained using CRS-1 and CRS-1P cationic emulsion tack coats as control materials.
The results show that the optimum application rate of pure Asbuton is 0.65 L/m². Furthermore, pure Asbuton used as a tack coat material in composite pavement produced higher interlayer shear strength than CRS-1 and CRS-1P tack coats at both 25°C and 60°C. An increase in temperature from 25°C to 60°C caused a reduction in ISS; however, pure Asbuton demonstrated better resistance to temperature changes than the other tack coat types, with an average reduction of 69.85%, while CRS-1P and CRS-1 experienced reductions of 70.77% and 79.12%, respectively. Although the ISS decreased at 60°C, the shear strength of Asbuton was still able to accommodate the shear stress estimated from BISAR 3.0 modeling under braking conditions of a truck with a 10-ton maximum axle load, as indicated by the stress-to-ISS ratio of Asbuton being less than one.
