Methyl orange (MO) is an azo dye that is resistant to natural degradation and has the potential to contaminate aquatic environments. Photocatalysis using SnO2 is considered a promising alternative for treating dye-contaminated wastewater through degradation processes. However, its photocatalytic performance is still limited due to its relatively wide band gap energy. This study aimed to enhance the photocatalytic activity of SnO2 by sulfur doping to reduce its band gap energy and improve the photodegradation of methyl orange. The research consisted of the preparation and characterization of sulfur-doped SnO2 (S-SnO2), followed by an evaluation of its photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of methyl orange under UV irradiation.

S-SnO2 was prepared via a hydrothermal method with SnCl4·5H2O as the tin precursor and thioacetamide (TAA) as the sulfur source at 150 ?  for 9 h, followed by calcination at 450 ?  for 3 h. The prepared materials were characterized using FTIR, XRD, DR UV-Vis, SEM-EDS, and XRF to analyze changes in functional groups, crystal structure, optical properties, morphology, and elemental composition. The photodegradation of methyl orange was carried out under UV irradiation by evaluating the effects of solution pH, photocatalyst dosage, irradiation time, and initial dye concentration.

The results demonstrated that sulfur-doped SnO2 with sulfur contents of 1, 3, 5, and 7% was successfully prepared, with the band gap energy decreasing from 3.14 eV to 3.06, 3.02, 2.95, and 2.99 eV, respectively. Consistent with the greatest reduction in band gap energy, the 5% S-doped SnO2 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity during the initial 60 min screening test, achieving a MO photodegradation efficiency of 29.1%, whereas undoped SnO2 achieved only 17.8%. The optimum degradation conditions were obtained at pH 7, a photocatalyst dosage of 2,0 g/L, an initial MO concentration of 10 mg/L, and an irradiation time of 9 h, resulting in a degradation efficiency of 75.60%. LC-MS/MS analysis indicated that methyl orange degradation proceeded through a stepwise pathway initiated by azo bond cleavage, followed by the mineralization of the intermediates into CO2 and H2O.
