In order to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and address climate change In an effort to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and address the challenges of climate change, this study focuses on the development of sustainable aviation fuel from non-edible biomass. Black Soldier Fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) larvae (maggots) are considered a promising feedstock for biojet fuel production due to their high lipid content, with lauric acid (C12:0) as the predominant fatty acid.

This study aims to optimize the hydrotreating process of maggot oil into biojet fuel through an experimental approach by comparing Mo and NiMo catalysts impregnated onto activated carbon or ZSM-5 supports. The catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) mapping, ammonia temperature programmed desorption (NH?-TPD), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis to obtain information on catalytic properties such as acidity and surface area. The prepared catalysts were subsequently evaluated in the hydrotreating process, and the liquid products were separated into two temperature fractions, 350–450 °C and 450–550 °C, which were considered as biojet fuel products.

The hydrotreating results demonstrated that the NiMo/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic activity. The biojet fuel yield obtained in the 350–450 °C fraction ranged from 41.39% to 52.68%, while the yield in the 450–550 °C fraction ranged from 15.85% to 26.98%. In terms of physicochemical properties, the produced biojet fuel exhibited a freezing point of ?47.59 °C, a density of 781.49 kg/m³, a kinematic viscosity of 1.83 mm²/s, and a heating value of 42.80 MJ/kg, all of which satisfy the commercial Jet A-1 fuel specifications.
