Closed-loop geothermal (CLG) systems are emerging as an Advanced Geothermal Systems (AGS) technology to extract geothermal energy without fluid mass transfer, thereby eliminating risks of scaling, brine-induced corrosion, and dependency on reservoir rock permeability. However, these closed circulation systems face a major challenge regarding lower heat extraction efficiency compared to conventional hydrothermal systems. This experimental study aims to analyze the effect of variations in the type of working fluid and volumetric flow rate on the thermal power capacity and overall system efficiency of a CLG laboratory prototype. The working fluids analyzed were aquades (density 1000 kg/m3, Cp 4180 J/kg.C) and thermal oil (density 857 kg/m3, Cp 1630 J/kg.C) which were circulated through a coaxial pipe test section at volumetric flow rate variations of 0.1 LPM, 0.3 LPM, 0.6 LPM, and 0.9 LPM. The subsurface geothermal heat source was simulated using six electric heater units. Inlet temperature (Tin), outlet temperature (Tout), and pressure drop parameters were recorded via a data logger until reaching a steady-state condition at the 30th minute. The experimental results reveal that the thermophysical properties of the fluids significantly dictate system performance. Due to its substantially higher specific heat capacity, aquades achieved a superior heat extraction rate (Qout) and overall thermal efficiency compared to thermal oil across all flow rate variations. Increasing the flow rate from 0.1 to 0.9 LPM accelerated fluid circulation and enhanced the extracted thermal power, despite decreasing the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet. This research successfully establishes the optimal performance characteristics of working fluids in closed-loop geothermal systems to support an efficient green energy transition in Indonesia.
