ABSTRACT
Copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) are heavy metals that pose significant risks to the primary productivity of marine ecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate the ecotoxicity of Cu and Cd on the growth of Dunaliella sp. and Tetraselmis chuii and to compare the sensitivity of these two microalgal species within a single bioassay system to identify a suitable test organism for biomonitoring. Toxicity tests were conducted over 96 h using cell density, specific growth rate (µ), growth inhibition, and IC?? as response endpoints. The results showed that both Cu and Cd inhibited the growth of the two microalgal species in a dose-dependent manner. In Dunaliella sp., the specific growth rate decreased from 0.1386 day?¹ in the control to ?0.0707 day?¹ under Cu exposure and ?0.1564 day?¹ under Cd exposure. In T. chuii, the specific growth rate remained positive (0.112–0.135 day?¹) but was lower than that of the control. The 96-h IC?? values for Dunaliella sp. were 32.6 mg/L (Cu) and 40.2 mg/L (Cd), whereas those for T. chuii were 8.7 mg/L (Cu) and 11.6 mg/L (Cd), indicating that T. chuii was more sensitive to both metals. These findings demonstrate that comparative interspecific evaluation improves the selection of microalgal test organisms for biomonitoring, with T. chuii showing strong potential as a sensitive bioindicator of heavy metal contamination in marine environments.
