Anguilla bicolor is an euryhaline species with high salinity plasticity. Variations in environmental salinity in the eel life cycle affect the osmoregulation mechanism of eels and induce alterations in renal structure. This study aimed to determine the effect of salinity on specific growth rate (SGR), blood creatinine levels, and changes in the renal histological structure of A. bicolor, and to analyze blood creatinine levels as an indicator of kidney function. Eels were subjected to 5 different salinity treatments, namely 0 ppt, 5 ppt, 10 ppt, 20 ppt, and 30 ppt for 6 weeks. Weight loss was observed in yellow eels across all salinity treatments, with the minimum decline occuring at 0 ppt (0.24% per day). Elver eels exhibited optimal growth at 5 ppt, with an SGR value of 0.59% per day and survival rate 100%. Blood creatinine levels in yellow eels increased significantly (p=0.047) at 5 ppt, though the value remained within normal limits. Histological parameters of the renal structure including percentage area of MMCs, the area ratio of Bowman’s space, and the renal tubular lumen diameter were not significantly influenced (p>0.05) by the tested salinity variations. The findings indicate that variations in salinity have no significant effect on histological changes in the kidney tissue of A. bicolor, a result attributed to the species' strong tolerance for a wide range of salinity levels. Low blood creatinine levels across all groups suggest that kidney filtration function remains unimpaired. Furthermore, this research revealed that optimal growth conditions differ by life stage, which yellow eels grow best in salinity of 0 ppt, whereas elvers achieve their best growth at 5 ppt.
