Childhood trauma is a developmental risk factor with long-term consequences for psychological functioning, neural processing of children’s emotional cues, and parenting quality in adulthood. However, the mechanisms linking early traumatic experiences to maternal parenting competency remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate trauma-specific reflective functioning (RF-T) as a psychological and neurophysiological mechanism underlying the relationship between childhood trauma and Parenting Sense of Competence (PSOC). The study involved 35 mothers with biological children aged 2–8 years. Psychological assessments included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Failure to Mentalize Trauma Questionnaire (FMTQ), and PSOC scale. Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were employed across two main studies. Study 1 utilized an event-related potentials (ERP) approach to examine the associations among childhood trauma, RF-T, and neural processing of children’s facial emotional expressions. The findings demonstrated that childhood trauma was associated with reduced N170 amplitudes in response to children’s happy faces, indicating disruption at the early perceptual stage of processing positive social cues. No significant effects were found for later ERP components (P300 and LPP), suggesting that attentional allocation and sustained emotional engagement were not significantly influenced by trauma history or RF-T. Study 2 employed a functional connectivity approach based on coherence and weighted Phase Lag Index (wPLI). The results indicated that RF-T fully mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and PSOC. Electrophysiologically, mothers with higher FMTQ scores demonstrated increased alpha coherence and reduced beta-band wPLI synchronization within long-range posterior–frontal connectivity. These findings suggest a predominance of automatic processing, suppression of mentalization processes, and weakened top-down regulation during socio-emotional information processing. Overall, RF-T was identified as a key mechanism linking the effects of childhood trauma to maternal parenting competency through both psychological and neurophysiological pathways.
