Geopolitical risk has emerged as a progressively significant factor contributing to global uncertainty in financial markets, particularly amid the rising frequency of international conflicts, interstate tensions, and various occurrences in the last ten years. This study targets to examine the effect of geopolitical risk on the returns of the Indonesia Composite Index (IHSG) and the SRI-KEHATI Index, as well as to check the moderating role of geopolitical acts and the impact of country-specific geopolitical risks. The study employs monthly data from January 2014 to April 2026 and utilizes multiple linear regression and moderated regression analysis. Geopolitical risk is assessed through the Geopolitical Risk Index (GPR), while geopolitical acts are proxied by the Geopolitical Acts Index (GPRA).
The results indicate that geopolitical risk has a negative and significant effect on the returns of both the IHSG and the SRI-KEHATI Index. Geopolitical acts are found to strengthen the negative impact of geopolitical risk on IHSG returns but not on SRI-KEHATI Index returns. Country-specific analysis reveals that only geopolitical risk originating from the United States significantly affects IHSG returns, whereas geopolitical risks from China and Russia are not statistically significant. These findings suggest that ESG-based indices exhibit greater resilience to geopolitical shocks than the broader stock market.
