The Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) is a packet communication system widely used in amateur radio applications and amateur satellite payloads, including low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. In these applications, the addition of Forward Error Correction (FEC) is required to improve the reliability of data reception because APRS generally uses the AX.25 protocol, which only has a Frame Check Sequence (FCS) mechanism to detect errors without the ability to correct them. Therefore, in channels affected by noise and fading, frames containing bit errors are discarded by the receiver. This study aims to integrate and evaluate several FEC schemes in the AX.25-based APRS communication model with 1200 bps AFSK modulation using GNU Radio and determine the optimum FEC configuration. The schemes tested included Reed Solomon RS (255,223), convolutional codes with several configurations, and a combination of both, on AWGN channels, as well as AWGN and Rayleigh fading. The performance parameters analyzed include BER, FER, PDR, coding gain, overhead, effective throughput, and link margin. The test results show that the combined RS and convolutional code scheme provides the best reliability with a coding gain of 7.5 dB and an increase in the link margin from 29.34 to 37.34 dB, despite having the highest overhead and lowest effective throughput. Thus, the optimal configuration is determined based on the trade-off between the error correction capability and transmission efficiency, not simply the lowest BER.
