Fall Armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E.

The Fall Armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a major pest of maize. In Indonesia, the first outbreak was reported in early May 2019 in Metro Kibang Subdistrict, East Lampung Regency. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the Cry1Ab toxin in Bacillus thuringiensis transgenic corn on the population of S. frugiperda as well as the level of damage to Bt corn plants. The study was conducted on a 1,500 m² agricultural plot consisting of three replicates in Tempel Subdistrict, Sleman Regency, using two corn varieties NK6172-Bt11GA21 (Bt corn) and NK6172 (conventional counterpart, non transgenic). The results showed that the Bt corn had no effect on the number of S. frugiperda egg masses (p = 0,370), however, this the Bt corn was able to suppress the number of larvae on leaves (p = 0,0024), the intensity of leave damage (p = 0,00016), cob damage (p = 0,00052), and the number of larvae on cobs (p = 0,000028). The effects of Bt corn on the stem damage, larva population on the stem, and the adult population could not be determined since their occurance was very low. Continuous monitoring is essential to prevent the resistensi development of S. frugiperda.
