Indonesia is a maritime country with high shipping activity, making its waters vulnerable to marine pollution, particularly oil spills that can cause widespread damage to coastal ecosystems. Optical satellite imagery has limitations in detecting oil spills due to its dependence on weather conditions and cloud cover, making Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery a more optimal alternative as it can operate at any time regardless of atmospheric conditions. One method that can be applied to SAR imagery is Adaptive Thresholding, which works by adjusting threshold values locally across each part of the image to detect dark areas indicated as oil spills. This study was conducted to examine the distribution of oil spills in the coastal waters of Pantai Nongsa, Batam, which was affected by pollution from the MT Pablo vessel fire in the waters of Tanjung Sedili, Johor Bahru, Malaysia on May 1, 2023, which caused black oil waste to reach the Nongsa coast two days later, but has never been scientifically studied. Although this area is located within the Strait of Singapore, the coastal waters of Pantai Nongsa are not part of the main shipping lane for large vessels, resulting in a thin oil spill that was difficult to detect visually.

The primary data used were Sentinel-1 Level-1 GRD IW mode VV polarization imagery across three epochs: April 21, May 3, and May 15, 2023. These dates were selected based on data availability and Sentinel-1's 12-day revisit interval, with May 3, 2023 coinciding with the date the oil pollution was first reported at Pantai Nongsa, with PlanetScope and Landsat 9 as supporting data. Sentinel-1 imagery processing included pre processing steps of apply orbit file, radiometric calibration, and speckle filtering using the Refined Lee Filter, followed by oil spill detection using the Adaptive Thresholding method in SNAP software. For comparison, PlanetScope imagery was processed using band ratios and visualized as RGB composites, while Landsat 9 was processed using SWIR2-NIR-Blue false color composites and band math to produce three spectral indices, namely NDOI, G-SWIR, and CaBGS, to observe surface water conditions in the study area.

Detection results show that oil spills were identified in the May 3, 2023 imagery as clustered dark patterns in the waters of Pantai Nongsa, and by May 15, 2023 the pattern had shifted into a more elongated shape with a spread length of 5.865 km, indicating oil spill movement due to current and wind influence. In follow-up observations, no oil spill was detected on May 27, 2023, it reappeared on June 8, 2023, and then disappeared by June 20, 2023. Comparison with PlanetScope and Landsat 9 optical imagery showed that neither was able to identify the oil spill in the same area, confirming that Sentinel-1 SAR imagery is more effective in detecting thin oil layers on the sea surface.
