This study compares the narrative of the Japanese animated film Giovanni’s Island with historical testimonies of survivors released by the Northern Territories Issue Association (Hokutaikyo). Both serve as memorials to the Soviet occupation of Shikotan Island. The study also examines how differences between these two narratives are reflected in Japanese audiences’ responses to the film. Through a content analysis of the film and the testimonies, the study reveals that, while both present a relatively consistent historical account, they emphasize different aspects. The film prioritizes human relationships and reconciliation, while the testimonies focus on the reality of the occupation and collective trauma experienced. An analysis of social media reviews from 2014 to 2025 reveals that audience responses were dominated by neutral to positive sentiments, primarily focusing on human values and the relationships between Japanese and Soviet characters. These findings suggest that the film offers a distinct historical portrayal from that in the testimonies and provides a platform for audiences to reinterpret Japan-Russia relations through popular culture.
