This study investigates the phenomenon of near-synonymy within the mental cognitive lexicon of the Indonesian language, specifically focusing on three primary verbs: tahu (to know), percaya (to believe), and mengira (to assume/suppose). While these verbs share a common semantic field as representations of internal conscious activities, they carry distinct gradations of certainty, factuality status, and epistemic responsibility when deployed by speakers. The objectives of this research are to describe the binary semantic feature configurations of each verb, to unravel the cognitive scenarios composing their core meanings, and to map the psychological nuances and pragmatic strategies underlying lexical selection.

This qualitative descriptive study implements a hybrid theoretical approach. Eugene Nida’s (1975) Componential Analysis of Meaning is used as a macro-classification tool to map binary distinctive features, whereas Anna Wierzbicka’s (1996) Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theory is applied for reductive explication using universal semantic primes. Linguistic data were extracted from the Indonesian Leipzig Corpora Collection (ind_mixed_2013) using the observational method with selecting and note-taking techniques, and further validated through the researcher's introspection as a native speaker. The collected data were subjected to formal syntactic-semantic testing (main clause negation, degree adverbial expansion, and counterfactual opposition) utilizing intralingual and extralingual matching methods.

The results demonstrate a rigid binary diagnostic boundary among the three lexemes. The verb tahu is proven to occupy an objective-factive position [+Fak, +Kep, -PK, -Sub] due to its adherence to factive presupposition. The verb percaya occupies an interpersonal-moral position [-Fak, -Kep, +PK, +Sub], while mengira stands in a speculative-temporal position [-Fak, -Kep, +PK, +Sub]. Through cognitive explication, the truth of tahu is enforced by external reality ("because it is like this"); the truth of percaya is consistently maintained by the subject's internal commitment ("I choose to keep thinking that P is true"); whereas mengira restricts its hypothetical validity to a brief temporal window ("now I think P is true... because I don't know much about P"). Sociopragmatically, this lexical selection reflects a speaker's face-management strategy. The verb tahu functions as a blocking tactic to assert discursive power, percaya acts as a bridging tactic to foster intersubjective solidarity, and mengira is strategically operated as an epistemic shield (hedging) to save the speaker's face from social accountability should the initial hypothesis later be invalidated by the counterfactual reality of ternyata (it turns out).
