Contemporary advances in neuroscience—particularly Libet's experiments and research on neural prediction—reveal
that human decision-making unfolds through complex and largely unconscious
neural mechanisms, so that the traditional conception of humans as free and
responsible agents appears threatened, while everyday moral intuitions and
practices continue to presuppose substantive freedom. The tension between free
will and neurobiological determinism is the root of the problem being
investigated.. This research aims to analyse the way Daniel C. Dennett responds
to the discourse of free will and neurobiological determinism as an effort to
clarify the field of the problem within the domain of human decision-making,
and to analyse how rationality operates as a bridge of integration between the
two within Dennett's compatibilism.

This research is a qualitative study employing a library research model.
Its material object is human decision-making, while its formal object is the
compatibilism of Daniel C. Dennett. The data are analysed through the method of
philosophical hermeneutics, comprising four methodical elements:
interpretation, description, historical continuity, and induction-deduction.

The findings are twofold. First, Dennett responds to the discourse by dismantling the incompatibilist premise underlying both hard determinism and libertarianism, namely that freedom requires the absence of determination, and by dismantling the Cartesian theatre framework underlying deflationary readings of neurobiological findings. This pattern yields a methodological finding: the same empirical data do not directly determine philosophical conclusions, since it is the interpreter's conceptual framework that does. Second, rationality understood as the capacity to respond to reasons operates as the bridge of integration, so that human autonomy appears as a graded achievement within a caused order rather than a rupture from it. This framework proves substantive, although objections from free will scepticism persist at a different level of premises.
