Curly lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. Crispa) cultivation in a Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) hydroponic system requires an appropriate combination of nutrient solution and lighting to support plant growth and productivity. This study aimed to evaluate root growth, plant yield, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of curly lettuce under different nutrient types and LED light spectra. The experiment was conducted in a hydroponic system using nutrient type (AB Mix and Growmore foliar fertilizer), LED light spectra consisting of Purple Light (LUK), White Light (LPK), Homogeneous Upper White Light (LPAH), and Homogeneous Lower White Light (LPBH), and rack position with two levels (upper and lower). The nitrogen concentration of both nutrient solutions was adjusted to the same level to ensure that differences in plant responses were attributable to the nutrient characteristics and the lighting treatments applied.
The results showed that nutrient type significantly affected root growth, while the interaction between nutrient type and LED spectrum significantly influenced biomass production and NUE. Root length ranged from 4.90 to 9.36 cm. The highest vegetative production was obtained under the PCL + AB Mix treatment, with a leaf area of 123 cm², fresh weight of 60.69 g, and dry weight of 3.94 g. The highest NUE value was also observed in the same treatment combination, reaching 274.
In conclusion, nutrient type and LED spectrum affected root growth, biomass production, and nitrogen use efficiency of curly lettuce grown in an NFT hydroponic system. The interaction between these factors resulted in significant differences in plant growth and productivity. The best treatment combination produced the highest growth, biomass production, and NUE value.
