Spodoptera exigua is a polyphagous pest that attacks shallots and various cultivated crops. The use of host plant volatile compounds offers potential as an environmentally friendly alternative for pest management. This study was conducted to determine the effect of volatile compounds emitted by Amaranthus sp. on the olfactory responses of S. exigua adults and to identify their volatile compound profile. Olfactory responses were evaluated using a Y-tube olfactometer, with first choice, latency time, and residence time as the observed parameters. Volatile compounds were collected using the headspace method and analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The olfactometer assay results showed that Amaranthus sp. did not significantly affect the attraction of either female or male S. exigua adults across all observed parameters. In contrast, shallot plants, used as a comparison treatment, exhibited significant attractiveness to female adults in terms of first choice and residence time. GC-MS analysis revealed that the volatile profile of Amaranthus sp. was dominated by long-chain alkane compounds, with heneicosane (72.33%) as the major constituent, followed by tetracontane (18.92%), nonacosane (4.63%), and tetracosane (0.15%). Several of these alkane compounds have been reported to possess attractant activity toward certain insect species. Therefore, Amaranthus sp. has the potential to be further developed as a natural source of attractants for S. exigua.
